Call for a Phase-Out of Gas Vehicles
We believe the only option to protect public health and prevent a climate catastrophe is to phase out the use of gas powered vehicles. We can’t afford to wait.
Transportation is America’s single biggest source of carbon emissions, contributing to climate change and global warming. Extracting, transporting, refining and using gasoline causes harm to people, air, water, land, animals, and plants.
Gas vehicle exhaust causes asthma, heart and lung disease, cancer, and thousands of premature deaths each year, and affects children and vulnerable populations the most.
In the past, we adopted reasonable vehicle regulations to require seat belts, airbags, catalytic converters, unleaded gas and other improvements to protect health and safety. It’s time to act again.
Viable technologies are available now to replace gas vehicles. Electric vehicle battery technology is developing rapidly and electric vehicles can be fueled wherever there is a supply of electricity.
To protect public health, clean the air, and slow a rapidly warming climate, we call on our state legislators to pass laws requiring that, starting with model-year 2030, all new passenger vehicles sold or registered in our state are clean vehicles, not gasoline or diesel vehicles.
