Support Washington’s Zero Emission Vehicle Bill (SB 5811)
URGENT — SEND YOUR MESSAGE BEFORE MARCH 19!
SB 5811, a bill that passed the Washington Senate, will have a hearing in the House Environment and Energy Committee on March 19. This bill would require automakers to sell a certain percent of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), primarily electric vehicles, within Washington State. Vehicle emissions are the biggest source of carbon emissions and air pollution, and passage of this bill would achieve major advances in public health and carbon reduction with virtually no cost to taxpayers.
The bill will cause automakers to stock, advertise, incentivize, and sell electric vehicles (EVs) in order to meet the minimum EV sales threshold in Washington. Right now, many of the newest and best EVs (such as the Hyundai Kona SUV) are not available in Washington, because automakers choose to prioritize sales of those EVs in the 10 ZEV states. The ZEV bill benefits drivers by giving them greater choice of EVs at better prices. Essentially, the ZEV bill passes the costs of supporting vehicle electrification from the taxpayers to the automakers, where they belong.
The ZEV mandate utilizes a credit system which requires major automakers to ensure that about 2.5% of their new cars sold in a state are zero emissions vehicles. Automakers that don’t meet the standards must purchase extra credits from other automakers that have exceeded the standard, or pay a penalty.

Subject: Please support ZEV Bill, SB 5811
Please support SB 5811, to require automakers to sell more electric vehicles in Washington.
Washingtonians deserve access to the newest electric vehicle models as soon as they come out. This bill will address the biggest source of carbon emissions and air pollution, at virtually no cost to taxpayers.
We can’t keep using gasoline without further damaging the world we are passing on to our children. The ZEV mandate is a common-sense, low-cost measure to move us away from gasoline and towards a sustainable, carbon-neutral future.
Please let me know if you will support SB 5811.
